Pillows and bed comfort

A pillow has one job: hold your head where your spine wants it. That height is different for a side sleeper and a back sleeper, which is why the most useful pillows here are the ones you can adjust and the least useful rule is "buy the firmest".

Before you buy

Do you actually need anything from this category?

Lie in your usual position and have someone look at you, or look in a mirror on your side: if your nose lines up with the centre of your chest, your pillow is the right height and it is not the problem. If your chin tips up, the pillow is too tall; if your head tips down, too flat. A pillow that is the right height but uncomfortable is a material question — heat, sink, bounce. A pillow that has gone flat or lumpy is simply old. A sore neck that persists regardless of pillow is a reason to see a clinician, not to buy a fourth pillow.

Decision framework

How to choose

Height first, then feel, then heat. Height (loft) follows position: side sleepers need the most, back sleepers less, stomach sleepers almost none — and shoulder width changes it. An adjustable pillow removes the guess. Feel is a preference: memory foam sinks and holds; latex springs back; down alternative is plush and collapses. Heat follows material: foam is warmest, latex and the Purple grid coolest. If the mattress rather than the pillow is the problem — hips, not neck — look at the topper, and only if the mattress is hard rather than sagging.

Loft and position

Side sleepers fill a shoulder-wide gap; back sleepers a small one; stomach sleepers none. Adjustable pillows set it to you.

Firmness and feel

Sinking foam, springy latex or plush fibre. Preference, not correctness — and the thing most people get wrong by buying "firm" for support.

Heat

Solid memory foam is warmest; shredded foam breathes a little; latex and grids run coolest; down alternative sits between.

Adjustability

Fill you can remove is the only way to fit a pillow to a body you cannot measure in a shop.

Care and lifespan

Shredded fill settles and needs a shake; polyester flattens in a year; solid foam and latex last but rarely wash.

Documentation

Certifications (CertiPUR-US, GREENGUARD Gold, OEKO-TEX), a trial and a warranty tell you a manufacturer stands behind the product. Not all of ours have them.

Beckham pillows

The Beckham Hotel Collection pillows are a set of two Standard/Queen down-alternative pillows with a soft, sink-in feel. They suit stomach and back sleepers, guest rooms, and anyone who dislikes foam. Polyester fill compresses and flattens over time, they offer less neck support than foam or latex, and side sleepers with broad shoulders will find them too low once they settle.

Best forStomach and back sleepers who want plush, and guest rooms on a budget.

Best soft solid-foam pillow
TEMPUR-Cloud

The TEMPUR-Cloud is a solid slab of Tempur-Pedic's slow-recovery TEMPUR material at an extra-soft feel and a modest five-inch height, under a removable washable knit cover. It suits back and stomach sleepers, and side sleepers with narrow shoulders, who want a plush, enveloping pillow with nothing to configure. It runs warm, it is not adjustable, and side sleepers with broad shoulders will find it too low.

Best forBack and stomach sleepers who want a plush, low, solid pillow.

Best for a too-firm mattress
Beckham topper

The Beckham topper is a quilted, down-alternative pillow-top pad with a fitted skirt for mattresses 8 to 14 inches deep, machine washable and OEKO-TEX certified per the listing. It suits people whose mattress is sound but too firm, and guest beds that need softening. It adds plushness, not support — it will not fix a sagging mattress — and polyester fill compresses over time.

Best forA sound mattress that is simply too hard.

Best for side sleepers
Coop Cut-Out

Coop's Cut-Out is the Original's adjustable fill in a shape with a curved notch at the front edge, so a side sleeper's shoulder tucks under the pillow instead of being shoved by it. It suits committed side sleepers who have already tried a rectangular adjustable pillow. The shape is wrong for back and stomach sleepers, and the linked listing is the King size.

Best forCommitted side sleepers whose shoulder fights a rectangular pillow.

Adjustable loft · Research-based
Coop Original

The Coop Original lets you change its height by adding or removing fill. This research-based review covers the rectangular Queen model, explains its adjustable design, and compares it with other pillows in our catalogue. SleepOriginal has not physically tested this pillow.

Best forSleepers who have struggled to fit fixed-height pillows and are willing to adjust the filling.

Best for hot sleepers
Purple Harmony

The Purple Harmony wraps a ventilated Talalay latex core in Purple's honeycomb GelFlex Grid and a moisture-wicking knit cover, giving a supportive, bouncy feel that runs cooler than memory foam. It suits hot side and back sleepers who want a fixed loft they choose at purchase (Low 5.5", Medium 6.5", Tall 7.5"). It cannot be adjusted afterwards and the warranty is short for the price.

Best forHot side and back sleepers who want support without sinking and know their loft.

Best budget contour pillow
Royal Therapy contour

The Royal Therapy is a contoured memory-foam pillow with a raised neck edge and a lower centre, 24 × 14 × 5 inches in the Queen listing. It suits back sleepers who want a shaped cradle and side sleepers curious about contour pillows at a low price. It is a fixed shape in a fixed foam, so it cannot be adjusted, and we could not verify fill or cover composition from the manufacturer.

Best forBack sleepers curious about a contoured pillow at a low price.

Questions

Pillows & Bed Comfort FAQ

What is the best pillow for side sleepers?

One with enough loft to fill the gap between ear and shoulder — usually more than a standard pillow gives. The adjustable Coop Original is the safest choice because the height is yours to set; the Purple Harmony Medium or Tall suits hot side sleepers; the Coop Cut-Out is for side sleepers whose shoulder fights the pillow's edge.

Should I buy a firm pillow for neck support?

Not as a rule. Support comes from the right height, not from hardness; a firm pillow at the wrong height is worse than a soft one at the right height. Get the loft right first.

How often should pillows be replaced?

Polyester down-alternative pillows flatten within a year or two; shredded foam lasts longer with shaking; solid foam and latex last several years. Replace when plumping no longer restores loft or the pillow has a permanent hollow.

Will a mattress topper fix a bad mattress?

Only a hard one. A pillow-top pad softens the surface; it follows a sag rather than correcting it. A mattress with a dip needs replacing.
