What a SleepOriginal product review is, what it is not, and the rules every one of them follows.
The product reviews in the SleepOriginal shop are editorial assessments. Each one is written to help you decide whether a product is right for you — including when the answer is "you do not need this". This page explains exactly how they are produced, so you can judge how much weight to give them.
What "review" means on this site
A SleepOriginal review is an original piece of analysis written by Leon Avelor. It is built from the manufacturer's documentation, the product's published specifications, independent reporting where it exists, and the sleep-science context that explains what the product is trying to do.
It is not a summary of Amazon customer reviews. We do not copy, paraphrase or count retailer reviews, and we never display a retailer's star rating unless it arrives through a permitted Amazon data feed with the timestamp and disclaimer that feed requires.
Whether a product was physically tested
Every review states its basis plainly, in the byline and again beside the verdict. As of the date on this page, none of the products in the shop have been hands-on tested by SleepOriginal. They are labelled "Research-based product analysis" or "Editorial assessment", and you will not find phrases like "during our testing" or "we wore it for 30 nights" on them, because that did not happen.
If a product is ever tested first-hand, the review will say so, describe what was done, and only then may it carry a SleepOriginal score. A score never appears on a research-based page.
What a research-based review offers instead is unusually careful work on the things that can be done without the product in hand: specification analysis, design analysis, a review of the relevant evidence, a comparison against the alternatives in our catalogue, buyer-fit analysis and a clear list of limitations.
How products are selected
- A product enters the catalogue because it addresses a bedroom or routine problem our readers actually describe — light, noise, temperature, air, comfort, timing, or the wish to observe their own sleep.
- Commission rate plays no part. Amazon pays the same category rate whichever product in that category you buy, and we do not accept payment for inclusion, placement or a favourable verdict.
- Every product gets a "who should skip it" section. If we cannot think of anyone who should skip a product, we have not thought hard enough.
- The catalogue is deliberately small — fifty slots, of which forty-seven are filled — so each product can be understood rather than listed.
How facts are verified
- Identity. The exact product, model, generation and the variant the Amazon link points to are checked against the live listing and the manufacturer's site. Where a link resolves to a specific size or colour, the review says so.
- Specifications. A specification is printed only when it can be traced to the manufacturer's documentation or a major retailer's listing. Anything we could not source is left out rather than estimated. Where sources disagree, the review says so rather than picking one.
- Never invented. Ratings, review counts, prices, discounts, stock, warranties, measurements, customer quotations, awards, certifications and test results are never made up. If it is on the page, it came from somewhere named on the page.
- Sources are labelled. Each review separates product facts (manufacturer), scientific context (peer-reviewed research and public-health guidance) and editorial judgement (ours), so an opinion never dresses up as a fact.
How sleep-science claims are handled
These products are not medical treatments and are never described as one. A sleep mask reduces light reaching the eyes; a sound machine masks noise; a tracker provides estimates; a weighted blanket applies pressure some people find calming. None of them cures insomnia, treats sleep apnoea, "resets" a circadian rhythm or guarantees deeper sleep, and no review will tell you otherwise. Where a manufacturer makes a stronger claim, it is reported as the manufacturer's claim.
Consumer sleep metrics are not clinical measurements. If you have persistent insomnia, symptoms that suggest sleep apnoea, or significant daytime impairment, a consumer product is not a substitute for a proper assessment. Our Evidence Policy covers how scientific claims are weighed across the site.
How affiliate links work
SleepOriginal is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program. As an Amazon Associate, SleepOriginal earns from qualifying purchases. Links to Amazon are marked as affiliate links beside the button, carry rel="sponsored", and go directly to the listing — there is no disguised redirect. You pay the same price either way, and the commission never changes what a review says. The full policy is on the Affiliate Disclosure page.
We do not print Amazon prices, discounts, "only two left" notices or countdowns, because we cannot keep them accurate and a wrong figure costs you more than a missing one.
How "best for" labels and shortlists are decided
A label such as "Best for side sleepers" or "Best without an app" is an editorial judgement made against the criteria printed on that guide, applied to the products in our catalogue. It is not a claim about every product on the market. Every label comes with the reason it was given, and every guide lists products that were considered and left off.
How pages are kept current
Each product review shows the date its identity and specifications were last verified and the date its copy was last meaningfully reviewed. Those dates change only when someone actually did the work — a page is never stamped "updated today" to look fresh. Products that are discontinued, superseded by a newer generation, or whose Amazon listing has changed are flagged on the page as soon as we know.
Conflicts and corrections
SleepOriginal sells its own guides and plans. Those are kept in a separate part of the site and are never presented as an alternative to a third-party product inside a review. If a reader, a manufacturer or a reviewer points out an error, we correct it and, where the error mattered, note the correction on the page. Write to hello@sleeporiginal.com.
