Buying guide

Best products for a dark bedroom

Darkness is one of the few sleep problems with a complete fix. This guide starts with the free ones and ends with what to pair a dark room with so mornings do not suffer.

Before you buy

Check the LEDs first: chargers, routers, TVs and standby lights are the commonest sources of bedroom light and tape fixes them for nothing. Then the curtain gap. If the room is still not dark, or you sleep in daylight, the picks below are worth it.

How we judged

The criteria behind this shortlist

Room or person

Curtains darken the room for everyone; masks darken one sleeper anywhere.

Completeness

Curtain edges leak unless hung wide and high; contoured masks seal.

Morning light

A dark room removes the dawn cue; plan to replace it.

Each pick, explained

Why each product earned its place

Best for the room

NICETOWN 100% Blackout Curtain Panels — 52 x 84 Inches, Set of 2

Opaque fabric for couples and mask-refusers. Hang wide, high and wrapped, or accept a glow at the edges.

NICETOWN's 100% blackout panels do the part a curtain can do: the fabric itself stops light, which the thinner room-darkening ranges do not. Whether your bedroom ends up dark depends on the part the curtain cannot do — the edges, the top and the centre gap — and that is a matter of rod width, a wraparound end and overlap. Buy them if you want the whole room dark and nothing on your face; buy a mask if you rent, travel or want darkness without hardware. Treat the noise-reduction claim as marketing, and plan for morning light separately.

Not ideal for: Renters who cannot mount a proper rod, frequent travellers, and people who need dawn light to wake.

Best for total personal darkness

Manta PRO Sleep Mask

Movable cups seal any face and it machine washes. Bulky and premium.

The Manta PRO is a contoured blackout mask built around one idea: the eye cups move, so the seal is fitted to your face rather than hoped for. That makes it the mask most likely to give a genuine blackout to people whose nose bridge or eye spacing defeats fixed-shape masks, and its washable, modular build is unusual in the category. It is also the bulkiest and most expensive mask we list. If you sleep on your back or side and want darkness above all, it is the strongest choice here; if you want something you barely notice, the Nidra or the Alaska Bear silk mask is the better call.

Not ideal for: Stomach sleepers, or anyone who wants a mask they can forget they are wearing.

Best value mask

MZOO Luxury 3D Contoured Sleep Mask — Black

Fixed contoured cups for most faces at a modest price.

The MZOO is the contoured mask to try first. Its moulded memory-foam cups keep the fabric off your eyelids — the single feature that makes a mask wearable all night — and it seals around the nose well enough for most faces, at a fraction of what the modular masks cost. Its limit is that the cup spacing is fixed: if light still creeps in at the nose bridge after loosening the strap, no amount of adjustment will fix it, and that is when the Manta PRO earns its premium. Side sleepers who find the raised edge intrusive should look at the slimmer Nidra instead.

Not ideal for: Faces that fixed-shape masks have never fitted, and stomach sleepers.

Best to pair with a dark room

Philips SmartSleep Wake-Up Light HF3520/60

A 300-lux sunrise restores the morning cue blackout removes. No app.

The Philips HF3520 is the wake light for people who want a wake light. It brightens over half an hour to a published 300 lux — the one figure the newer devices do not give you — then plays one of five sounds or the radio, and it is all set on the device with no app, account or subscription. It also dims as a sunset and doubles as a reading lamp. Where it shows its age is everything else: a dated display, no sound library, no Bluetooth. If light is your wake cue, this is the honest choice; if sound and routine matter more, the Hatch or Loftie.

Not ideal for: People who want sleep sounds, Bluetooth or an app routine.

Bottom line

If you only read one paragraph

Tape the LEDs, then curtains for the room or a mask for the person, then a wake light or an immediate-daylight habit so the darkness ends when it should. Most people need one of the middle two, not both.
