Oura
Oura Ring 4
Best for: People who want sleep and recovery trends with nothing on the wrist and nothing to look at in the night.
Trade-off: The membership, and a link to one specific size and colour.
Head-to-head
Two screenless trackers with subscriptions and opposite personalities: Oura is a ring built around sleep and recovery trends; WHOOP is a band built around training strain.
The short answer
Choose the Oura Ring 4 if sleep is the priority: a titanium ring you forget, five to eight days of battery, temperature and sleep-timing trends, and a membership at $5.99 a month. Choose WHOOP Life if you train hard and want sleep coached against strain and recovery, on a band you never remove, sold as a year of membership. Both estimate sleep stages and both are most useful as trends. Neither replaces a clinical assessment.
Oura
Best for: People who want sleep and recovery trends with nothing on the wrist and nothing to look at in the night.
Trade-off: The membership, and a link to one specific size and colour.
WHOOP
Best for: Athletes and hard trainers who want sleep read in the context of strain and recovery.
Trade-off: It is a subscription first; the band is inert without it.

When each one wins
The SleepOriginal verdict
Oura for the sleeper, WHOOP for the athlete. Both will tell you when you slept and roughly how well; the difference is the story each app tells about it, and which story you want to read every morning.
Questions
Both estimate stages from heart rate and movement and neither is a clinical measure. Independent validation studies of consumer wearables find them good at total sleep time and weaker at stages; differences between these two are smaller than the gap between either and a sleep lab.
