Buying guide

Best weighted blankets — and what they can and cannot do

Some people settle under steady pressure; the research is small and mixed. This guide treats weight as a preference to test, and picks by how well each product delivers it.

Before you buy

If a heavy duvet or a tight tuck has never made you feel calmer, a weighted blanket probably will not either. If it has, test the idea cheaply before buying the premium version. There is no good evidence a weighted blanket treats insomnia or anxiety; persistent insomnia has an evidence-based treatment — CBT-I — and it is not a blanket. Heavy covers are unsafe for anyone who cannot remove them unaided.

How we judged

The criteria behind this shortlist

How the weight is made

Beads in pockets (dense, warm, cheap) or knit density (breathable, washable, dear).

Weight choice

About a tenth of body weight is the usual start; lighter if unsure.

Heat and washing

The two reasons people stop using the blanket they bought.

Safety

Must be removable unaided; ask a clinician about respiratory or circulatory conditions.

Why each product earned its place

Best to try first

YnM Weighted Blanket — 15 lb, 48 x 72 Inches, Dark Grey

Standard glass-bead design at a low price with cover loops. Warm; wash the cover, not the blanket.

The YnM is the weighted blanket to buy first. It is the standard design — glass beads in small quilted pockets under a cotton shell — done adequately and priced low enough that finding out whether weight settles you is not an expensive experiment. It is warm, it is awkward to wash without the cover its loops are made for, and it covers one person. If the feel works for you, the Bearaby is the cooler, washable upgrade; if it does not, you have lost little. We have removed the anxiety-relief claim this record once carried: the evidence does not support it.

Not ideal for: Hot sleepers, couples, or anyone expecting a treatment.

Best to keep

Bearaby Cotton Hand-Knit Weighted Blanket

Weight from the knit: breathable, nothing to shift, machine washable. Premium and one-person.

The Bearaby Cotton Napper is the weighted blanket to choose if the reason you stopped using one was heat or washing. Its weight comes from the density of the organic-cotton knit rather than beads, so air moves through it, nothing shifts inside, and the whole thing goes in a cool wash. It is a one-person blanket at a premium price, the knit snags, and — as with every weighted blanket — the evidence that it improves sleep is thin and personal. If you already know weight settles you, this is the most comfortable and practical version of it; if you are curious, the YnM is the cheaper experiment.

Not ideal for: Couples sharing one blanket, or anyone expecting a treatment.

Best weighted mask

Nodpod Gentle Pressure Sleep Mask

The same idea at eye level, strap-free. Back sleepers only; drapes rather than seals.

The nodpod is a different kind of mask. Instead of sealing light out, it drapes four bead-filled pods over the eyes and temples with no strap, and the point is the gentle, even weight as much as the darkness. For back sleepers who find that pressure calming it can be the mask that finally stays on; for everyone else it is a compromise, because it slides when you turn and it drapes rather than seals. Buy it for the feeling. Buy a contoured mask for the darkness.

Not ideal for: Side sleepers, and anyone who wants a light-tight seal.

Bottom line

If you only read one paragraph

YnM to find out, Bearaby if it works and heat or washing become the problem, nodpod if you want the sensation without a full blanket. All three are comfort items; none is a treatment, and this guide will not tell you otherwise.

Questions

FAQ

What weight should I choose?

About 10% of body weight is the common starting point. Choose lighter if unsure or if you find heavy covers hard to move, and never use a weighted blanket for a child or anyone who cannot remove it alone.
