Buying guide

Best sleep trackers without a watch or screen

A screen on the wrist at 3 a.m. is the reason many people stop tracking. These three measure without one.

Before you buy

If the watch is the only thing stopping you tracking, a ring or a mat solves it. If the real problem is that sleep data makes you tense, no form factor fixes that — track for two weeks, read the trends, and stop. A consistent wake time will do more for most people than any device here.

How we judged

The criteria behind this shortlist

Nothing to look at

No display, no raise-to-wake, no notifications in bed.

Nothing to feel

A ring or a mat is forgotten; a band is not quite.

Charging burden

How often the device comes off, and whether that gap lands at night.

Each pick, explained

Why each product earned its place

Best ring

Oura Ring 4

Screenless, week-long battery, temperature trends. Needs a membership and the right size.

The Oura Ring 4 is the tracker for people who want data without a device demanding attention. It is a titanium ring with optical, temperature and motion sensors, it runs five to eight days per charge, and because it has no screen it changes nothing about how a bedroom feels at night. Its sleep staging is an estimate, like every consumer tracker's, but its trends — resting heart rate, HRV, temperature deviation, sleep timing — are the useful part and they accumulate reliably because the ring is actually worn. Factor in the membership, and check the size before buying the Silver size 8 our link resolves to.

Not ideal for: Subscription-averse buyers, and anyone expecting a diagnosis from a ring.

Best non-wearable

Withings Sleep Tracking Mat

Under the mattress: nothing to wear, charge or subscribe to. Measures snoring. One bed only.

The Withings Sleep is the tracker for people who will not wear one. A thin pad under the mattress reads heartbeat, breathing and movement through the mattress, listens for snoring, and reports to the app over Wi-Fi — with no subscription and nothing to charge. That makes it the most effortless data source in our catalogue and the only one that measures snoring. Its limits are the flip side of its design: it knows one side of one bed, it needs a compatible mattress and a socket, and its stage estimates carry less physiological signal than a device on the skin. Same bed every night: buy it. Frequent travel: buy the ring.

Not ideal for: Travellers, air-mattress users, and restless couples sharing the sensor side.

Best screenless band

WHOOP Life — 12-Month Membership

No display, charged on the wrist, built for training. A yearly membership.

WHOOP Life is a coaching service that comes with a band, not a band that comes with an app. For someone who trains hard, that is the point: sleep is read against strain and recovery, the band is never removed thanks to a 14-plus-day battery and an on-body charger, and the Life tier adds ECG and blood-pressure insights. For someone who simply wants to understand their sleep, it is more product — and more ongoing cost — than the job needs. Its sleep staging is an estimate, as with every consumer wearable; its value is the loop, not the number.

Not ideal for: People who want to own a tracker outright or who do not train systematically.

Products that did not make the shortlist

  • Fitbit Charge 6 — has a screen, which is what this guide is avoiding; sleep mode dims it, but it is still there.

Bottom line

If you only read one paragraph

Ring if you travel and want daytime data; mat if you sleep in one bed and want no subscription; WHOOP if you train. All three leave the bedside dark.
