Buying guide

Best sleep products for travel

Away from home the bedroom is not yours. These are the products that carry the familiar parts with you.

Before you buy

If you sleep fine in hotels, pack nothing. If the corridor, the light gap or the strange pillow gets you, one or two of these will help — and most weigh less than a paperback. The tracker is optional; the mask and plugs are the ones that earn their space.

Best travel sound machine

SNOOZ Go 2 Travel Sound Machine

Twelve sounds with brown noise, a 24-hour stated battery, a speaker and a nightlight, clipped to a bag.

The SNOOZ Go 2 is the travel machine in our catalogue with the most complete feature list: twelve sounds including brown and pink noise, a 24-hour stated battery, a Bluetooth speaker mode and a nightlight, in a unit you can clip to a bag. For hotel rooms, tents and cots away from a socket it does the job a bedside machine cannot. Its compromises are the ones every small recorded-sound device makes — a modest speaker and the possibility of a loop seam — and it is new enough that long-term reliability is unknown. Buy it to travel; keep a fan machine at home.

Not ideal for: A fixed bedside in a loud room, or anyone who reliably hears loops.

Best for shared rooms

Dreamegg D3 Pro White-Noise Sound Machine

Rechargeable with a headphone jack, so one traveller gets sound and the other silence.

The Dreamegg D3 Pro is the sound-variety travel machine: twenty-nine white-noise, fan and nature tracks, a headphone jack so one sleeper can have sound without the other, a rechargeable battery and auto-off timers, in a design with years of independent coverage behind it. It is the machine to pack when you and a partner disagree about noise, or when you want rain one night and a fan the next. It plays recordings from a small speaker, so it is neither loop-proof nor powerful; for a loud bedside at home, choose a fan machine or the LectroFan.

Not ideal for: Loud fixed bedrooms, or sleepers who reliably hear loops.

Best travel mask

Nidra Contoured Deep-Rest Sleep Mask

Light, slim, packs flat; contoured so the plane and the hotel window disappear.

The Nidra Deep-Rest is the contoured mask for side sleepers. It keeps the deep eye cups that stop fabric touching your lids, but trims the outer profile and the weight so the mask does not lever off when your face meets the pillow. That slimness is also the compromise: the seal at the nose is less forgiving than a Manta PRO's, and the cups cannot be moved. If you sleep on your side and have abandoned bulkier masks, start here; if you sleep on your back, the MZOO gives a more substantial cup for similar money.

Not ideal for: People chasing the most airtight seal available, or with faces fixed cups have never fitted.

Best travel earplugs

Loop Quiet 2 Earplugs

Reusable silicone in four sizes for planes, corridors and offices alike.

Loop Quiet 2 is the sensible all-rounder among earplugs: reusable silicone, four tip sizes so most ears can find a seal, a smaller nozzle than the first generation, and a 24 dB SNR rating that turns a noisy bedroom into a quiet one without cutting you off from an alarm. It costs less than Loop Dream and works as well on a plane as in bed. What it is not is a side-sleeper design — the ring body stands proud of the ear, and if a pillow has ever pushed a plug into your canal, Dream is the one to buy. For everyone else, start here.

Not ideal for: Hard side sleepers, or anyone who needs to hear a child clearly.

Best tracker that travels

Oura Ring 4

A week of battery in a ring; it records the hotel night the mat at home cannot.

The Oura Ring 4 is the tracker for people who want data without a device demanding attention. It is a titanium ring with optical, temperature and motion sensors, it runs five to eight days per charge, and because it has no screen it changes nothing about how a bedroom feels at night. Its sleep staging is an estimate, like every consumer tracker's, but its trends — resting heart rate, HRV, temperature deviation, sleep timing — are the useful part and they accumulate reliably because the ring is actually worn. Factor in the membership, and check the size before buying the Silver size 8 our link resolves to.

Not ideal for: Subscription-averse buyers, and anyone expecting a diagnosis from a ring.

Bottom line

If you only read one paragraph

Mask and plugs first — together they weigh nothing and fix the two things hotels get wrong. Add the SNOOZ Go 2 if sound is your anchor at home, the Dreamegg if you share rooms, and the ring only if you already track.
