Best sleep masks for side sleepers

The pillow is the side sleeper's mask problem: deep cups press in, flat masks slide. These four handle it differently.

Before you buy

Only if light reaches your eyes. Stand in the dark bedroom for two minutes; if you can see your hand clearly, light is getting in. Tape over LEDs and close the curtain gap first. If the room is dark and you still wake at dawn, or you sleep in daylight, a mask is worth it.

Our picks at a glance

PickProductWhyTrade-off
Best overall for side sleepers Nidra Deep-Rest Deep cups inside a slim edge, light enough to forget, in two sizes. Less forgiving at the nose than deeper masks. The slimmer edge gives up some seal at the nose compared with deeper masks. Amazon ↗
Best value MZOO Fixed foam cups, lower profile than modular masks, a fraction of the price. Fits most faces; not all. The cups do not move, so the seal at the nose is take-it-or-leave-it. Amazon ↗
Best seal Manta PRO Movable cups seal faces fixed masks leak on. Bulkier on the pillow; the trade for total darkness. Bulk and price: it is the largest and dearest mask in our catalogue. Amazon ↗
Best for comfort over blackout Alaska Bear silk mask Flat silk works in any position and runs cool. Dims rather than blacks out. It dims rather than blacks out, and it rests on the eyelids. Amazon ↗

How we judged

The criteria behind this shortlist

Profile against the pillow

The decisive factor. Slim outer edges stay comfortable; deep cups lever off.

Seal on your side

Turning your head pulls at the seal; a mask that seals on cheekbone rather than pressing on the lids holds better.

Weight and heat

A light mask stays put; silk runs cool but does not seal.

Each pick, explained

Why each product earned its place

Best overall for side sleepers

Nidra Contoured Deep-Rest Sleep Mask

Deep cups inside a slim edge, light enough to forget, in two sizes. Less forgiving at the nose than deeper masks.

The Nidra Deep-Rest is the contoured mask for side sleepers. It keeps the deep eye cups that stop fabric touching your lids, but trims the outer profile and the weight so the mask does not lever off when your face meets the pillow. That slimness is also the compromise: the seal at the nose is less forgiving than a Manta PRO's, and the cups cannot be moved. If you sleep on your side and have abandoned bulkier masks, start here; if you sleep on your back, the MZOO gives a more substantial cup for similar money.

Not ideal for: People chasing the most airtight seal available, or with faces fixed cups have never fitted.

Best value

MZOO Luxury 3D Contoured Sleep Mask — Black

Fixed foam cups, lower profile than modular masks, a fraction of the price. Fits most faces; not all.

The MZOO is the contoured mask to try first. Its moulded memory-foam cups keep the fabric off your eyelids — the single feature that makes a mask wearable all night — and it seals around the nose well enough for most faces, at a fraction of what the modular masks cost. Its limit is that the cup spacing is fixed: if light still creeps in at the nose bridge after loosening the strap, no amount of adjustment will fix it, and that is when the Manta PRO earns its premium. Side sleepers who find the raised edge intrusive should look at the slimmer Nidra instead.

Not ideal for: Faces that fixed-shape masks have never fitted, and stomach sleepers.

Best seal

Manta PRO Sleep Mask

Movable cups seal faces fixed masks leak on. Bulkier on the pillow; the trade for total darkness.

The Manta PRO is a contoured blackout mask built around one idea: the eye cups move, so the seal is fitted to your face rather than hoped for. That makes it the mask most likely to give a genuine blackout to people whose nose bridge or eye spacing defeats fixed-shape masks, and its washable, modular build is unusual in the category. It is also the bulkiest and most expensive mask we list. If you sleep on your back or side and want darkness above all, it is the strongest choice here; if you want something you barely notice, the Nidra or the Alaska Bear silk mask is the better call.

Not ideal for: Stomach sleepers, or anyone who wants a mask they can forget they are wearing.

Best for comfort over blackout

Alaska Bear Mulberry Silk Sleep Mask — Original Black

Flat silk works in any position and runs cool. Dims rather than blacks out.

The Alaska Bear is the comfort-first mask in our catalogue. It is flat, light and silk on both faces, which makes it the easiest mask to forget you are wearing and the coolest one on a warm night — and the only one here that stomach sleepers can wear without complaint. What it is not is a blackout mask: a flat design rests on the eyelids and leaves a gap at the nose. Buy it to make a dim room darker in comfort; buy a contoured mask if darkness itself is the goal.

Not ideal for: People who need complete darkness or have found flat masks press on the eyes.

Bottom line

If you only read one paragraph

Nidra for most side sleepers; MZOO to spend less; Manta PRO when the seal is what has failed; silk when comfort beats darkness. Loosen the strap — every one of these fails first on tightness, not on light.
